Six hidden reasons your enamel is losing minerals — and only one of them is about brushing

Enamel is a mineral. Minerals dissolve in acid. That one sentence explains more about why teeth fail than anything you were ever taught about technique.

There is a number for it: below a pH of about 5.5, enamel starts giving up mineral. Above it, mineral moves back in. Everything below is about what pushes you under that line, and how often.

You brush at the two moments furthest from the six that matter

Every time you eat or drink, plaque bacteria turn it into acid within seconds. pH falls for about five minutes, sits under the line for roughly fifteen more, and saliva then spends twenty minutes climbing back.

How often you eat matters more than how much

This is old, settled cariology and it still surprises people. A chocolate bar eaten in one sitting opens one window. The same bar eaten in six pieces across an afternoon opens six.

Which means the careful person who grazes all day can be worse off than the one who has a large pudding and then leaves the mouth alone for four hours. Enamel does not count calories. It counts occasions.

Sparkling water and coffee are acid windows too

Nothing here has to be sweet. Carbonated water is mildly acidic by definition — the bubbles are carbonic acid — and it sits close enough to the line to matter when it is sipped over an hour at a desk.

Coffee is acidic. So is tea with lemon. So is a glass of wine. Nobody is going to give these up, and this article is not going to suggest it. But they are windows, and they are never counted as such.

The healthy swaps are often the most acidic things you drink

Lemon water first thing. Kombucha. Cider vinegar. Citrus. Sports drinks. Every one of these arrived in a diet as an upgrade, and every one of them is strongly acidic.

A dry mouth removes both of your defences at once

Saliva does two jobs. It buffers the acid back up, and it carries the mineral that goes back into the surface. Lose saliva and you lose both at the same time.

Common causes: many prescription medications, breathing through the mouth at night, dehydration, stress — and, quietly, alcohol-based mouthwash. A product bought to make the mouth cleaner can leave it drier, and a drier mouth is worse at defending itself.

So what actually goes back in?

Enamel is not made of “calcium” in a general sense. It is made overwhelmingly of one specific mineral: hydroxyapatite. When enamel loses mineral, that is the mineral it loses — so the idea is not a substitute or a coating, but the same material offered back, in a particle small enough to settle onto the surface.

The second half is the bacteria producing the acid. There the useful ingredient is xylitol: close enough to sugar that they take it up, and then unable to metabolise it. They fill up on something that gives them nothing.
