The truth about whitening: yellow teeth are usually not dirty teeth

The colour you see is mostly the dentine showing through the enamel. As enamel thins — with age, with acid, with abrasion — more of that yellow comes through. Which means a tooth that looks yellower is very often a tooth with less enamel, not a tooth with more dirt on it. Scrubbing harder makes the real problem worse.
But it adds nothing. It does not thicken enamel, it does not smooth the surface, and it does not change why the tooth was getting darker. It is also the reason so many people report sensitivity during a course — and sensitivity is a signal about the surface, not a side effect to be pushed through.
Enamel does not grow back. Anything that removes stain by abrasion is removing a little of the surface with it, and on a thinning surface that is the exact opposite of what the tooth needs. “Natural” describes where an ingredient came from, not what it does to a mineral.
Neither is a change to the tooth. One is scrubbing and one is a filter. Both are fine as far as they go; neither is doing what the packaging implies.
Nothing in the stronger version addresses the surface either. You get a whiter tooth for a while, on a surface that is in exactly the condition it was in before you started.
So what actually makes a tooth look whiter, for real?
Two things, and neither of them is bleach.
A smoother surface holds less stain. Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco stain a rough, demineralised surface far more readily than a smooth, well-mineralised one. Fill in the microscopic pits and there is less for pigment to lodge in.
A smoother surface reflects light differently. A pitted enamel surface scatters light and reads as dull. A smooth one reflects it and reads as brighter. Nothing has been bleached; the surface simply behaves differently.
Which turns the question around. Instead of “how do I take the colour out”, the question becomes “how do I get the surface back?”
What the surface is made of
Enamel is not “calcium” in a general sense. It is made overwhelmingly of one specific mineral: hydroxyapatite. When acid takes mineral out of the surface, that is the mineral it takes.
So the idea is not complicated: if that is what is leaving, offer the tooth the same thing back. Not a substitute, not a coating, not a pigment. The same material, in a particle small enough to settle into the surface.
And why the surface keeps losing it
Because below a pH of about 5.5, enamel starts giving up mineral — and that happens every time you eat or drink something, not only when you eat sugar. Coffee does it. Sparkling water does it. Wine does it.
Breakfast, coffee, something mid-morning, lunch, an afternoon coffee, dinner. Six occasions is six acid windows a day, and you brush at the two moments furthest away from all of them. Which is why the surface keeps getting rougher, and why the tooth keeps drifting yellower no matter how many strips go on it.
What is actually measured
Four numbers, and it is worth being precise about where each one comes from. The first was measured in a laboratory. The other three come from users over four weeks of ordinary use.

- Mineral, not just cleaning. Hydroxyapatite is what enamel is made of. It is the one thing a rinse that only removes can never give back.
