The Drink Label Field Guide
A short read for the coffee queue, the supermarket aisle and the desk with a half-finished drink.
1. Ask two questions
Does it contain sugar? Is it acidic? Sugar-free soft drinks can still be acidic. A claim on the front of a bottle rarely answers both questions.
2. Look at the habit as well as the label
For sweetened drinks, repeated sipping prolongs contact with sugar. Choose water as your regular drink; if you have a sweetened drink, avoid stretching it across the afternoon.
3. After an acidic drink
Rinse with water. The ADA advises waiting an hour before brushing after acidic food or drink. Keep your usual daily brushing and between-teeth cleaning routine.
Your next-drink checklist
- Check the sugar information.
- Remember that sugar-free does not mean acid-free.
- Notice how long you keep sipping.
- Keep water within reach.
