We checked 17 mouthwashes and oral sprays. Only two put anything back on your teeth.

What this article is: we went through seventeen mouthwashes and oral sprays sold in Europe and asked one question of every single one of them — after you spit, is anything left on the tooth? Below are the six things we checked, what we found, and the five that came out on top.
Most people buy a mouthwash for one of two reasons. Breath, or the vague feeling that brushing on its own was not quite enough. Almost nobody turns the bottle around and reads the back.
We did. Seventeen of them — the ones actually sitting on European shelves and in European baskets, from the supermarket brands everyone recognises to the pharmacy ones that cost four times as much. We were not grading taste, or packaging, or how the marketing made us feel. We were looking for one thing only.
Does anything stay on the tooth after you spit?
Nearly all of them are built to remove and to mask. Very few are built to leave something behind. Once you see that split, the whole shelf reorganises itself in front of you — and it turns out most of what people spend money on is on the wrong side of it.
First: what is a rinse actually for?
Brushing is mechanical. Bristles scrub plaque off a surface, the way a brush cleans a plate. That part works, and nothing here suggests otherwise.
But the damage that ends with a filling is not mechanical. It is chemical. Enamel is a mineral, and minerals dissolve in acid.
There is a number for it. Below a pH of about 5.5, enamel starts giving up mineral. That is not a marketing figure; it is the point at which the chemistry tips. Above it, mineral moves back in. Below it, mineral moves out.
So the honest question to ask a mouthwash is not “does it kill germs” or “does it feel clean”. It is: which side of that exchange are you on?
What happens in your mouth in the 40 minutes after you eat
This is the part that surprised us most, and it is well documented. You eat or drink something — it does not have to be sweet, a fizzy water or a coffee will do it — and the mouth does the same thing every time:
- Minutes 0–5. pH falls. Bacteria in plaque turn what you ate into acid within seconds.
- Minutes 5–20. Below 5.5. Mineral is leaving the enamel surface. Nothing hurts, nothing is visible, and it is happening.
- Minutes 20–40. Saliva buffers the acid back up and begins putting mineral back — if there is mineral available to put back.
Now do the arithmetic nobody does out loud. Breakfast, coffee, a mid-morning something, lunch, an afternoon coffee, dinner. Six eating occasions is six acid windows a day — and you brush at the two moments furthest away from all of them.
That is the gap. Not brushing badly. Brushing at the wrong time, twice, for something that happens six times.

Belief 1: “It cleans my mouth.”
Mostly it removes and it kills. Those are useful, but they are subtraction. Nothing about removing plaque puts mineral back into a surface that has just lost some. A rinse that only subtracts leaves the tooth exactly where the acid left it.
Belief 2: “Fresh breath means a clean mouth.”
This one is worth reading twice. Most of the bad smell in a mouth comes from bacteria on the back of the tongue breaking down proteins into sulphur compounds. A strong mint covers those compounds; it does not remove the bacteria making them. And many rinses are built on alcohol, which dries the mouth out. A dry mouth makes less saliva, and saliva is both the buffer against acid and the delivery system for mineral. So the product bought for breath can quietly make the mouth worse at defending itself — and two hours later the smell is back, because nothing that caused it was addressed.
Belief 3: “They all do more or less the same thing.”
This is the one that costs people money, and it is the reason we did the test at all. The bottles look alike. The ingredient lists do not. The difference between a product that removes and a product that leaves mineral behind is not a matter of degree. They are doing two different jobs.
What the science actually supports
Enamel is not made of “calcium” in a general sense. It is made overwhelmingly of one specific mineral: hydroxyapatite. When enamel loses mineral, that is the mineral it loses.
Which sets up the obvious idea, and it took a surprisingly long time for anyone to act on it: if that is what is leaving, offer the tooth the same thing back. Not a substitute, not a sealant. The same material, in a form small enough to settle onto the surface.
The second half of the problem is the bacteria producing the acid in the first place. Here the useful ingredient is xylitol. It resembles sugar closely enough that the bacteria driving decay take it up — and then cannot metabolise it. They fill up on something that gives them nothing.
Between them, those two cover both halves: what is being taken away, and what is taking it.
What we looked for
We set the criteria before we looked at a single product, so that the winner would be an outcome rather than an opinion. Six questions, asked of all seventeen:
- Does it leave mineral behind, or only remove? The whole test, in one line.
- Is it alcohol-free? Because a dry mouth is a mouth with less saliva.
- Is it safe to swallow? This one decides more than it sounds like. If it must be spat out, it can only ever be used at a sink.
- Does it need water and rinsing? Anything that has to be rinsed off cannot leave much behind by definition.
- Can you carry it? A 500 ml bottle lives in a bathroom. The acid windows do not.
- Is it made for daily, long-term use — or is it a limited course with a stated end date?
Of seventeen products, fifteen failed the first question outright. Only two leave any mineral on the tooth at all. The remaining three places on the list below went to the best of what was left — because most people are going to keep buying a rinse, and some rinses are considerably better than others.
What actually happens when you use one that leaves mineral behind
Since this is the whole point of the test, it is worth being specific about what the first weeks look like. Not the promise — the sequence.
- Seconds 0–5. Two or three sprays, aimed at teeth and tongue, held for five seconds. No water, no rinsing, no sink. This is the part that matters more than it sounds: it means it can be used at the desk, in the car, after lunch — at the exact moments the acid window is open.
- Within three minutes. A measured 62 % reduction in the main cavity-causing bacteria. That is a laboratory figure, not a feeling.
- Within the hour. The window after that coffee closes earlier instead of running its full course. One occasion is trivial. Six a day, every day, is the entire difference.
- The first week — breath. The change people notice first, and it comes from the tongue rather than from mint. Less of the bacteria producing sulphur compounds means less of the smell, instead of a stronger cover over it. And because there is no alcohol, the mouth is not left dry two hours later.
- Weeks 1–4 — the visible part. Over four weeks of use: 84 % reported less staining, 73 % observed less tartar, and 82 % noticed visibly whiter teeth. Note what that whitening is: not bleach stripping the surface, but a surface that is smoother and holds less stain.
- Ongoing. The tooth is not a wound that heals once. It is an exchange that runs all day, every day. Which is why what matters is not one impressive week but never running out.

Ranked against the six criteria above, in that order. Every claim about another manufacturer’s product below is taken from that manufacturer’s own published ingredient list or usage instructions — nothing here is our impression of how a product performed.
The twelve that did not make the list are not named. There is no point: they are not bad products, they are simply built to do a different job, and most of them do it perfectly well.
The only product of the seventeen that answers all six questions the same way, and the only one that is not a rinse at all.

The formula is built on hydroxyapatite — the mineral enamel is made of — with xylitol working on the bacteria producing the acid. There is no fluoride and no alcohol, and it is safe to swallow.
The recorded figures: a 62 % reduction in the main cavity-causing bacteria within three minutes, measured in the lab. Over four weeks of use, 84 % reported less staining, 73 % observed less tartar and 82 % noticed visibly whiter teeth. What we did not like: frequently out of stock, and only available online — there is no shelf to pick it off.
The strongest of the conventional rinses, and the only other product in the seventeen built around the same idea. Its MICROREPAIR® formula is based on zinc-hydroxyapatite — hydroxyapatite microparticles combined with zinc — and the published ingredient list also carries xylitol and zinc PCA.
By the manufacturer’s own statement it contains no alcohol, no fluoride and no chlorhexidine. On our first two criteria it passes cleanly, and it deserves the second place without qualification.
What we did not like: it is a rinse, and a rinse is a bathroom product. A 500 ml bottle does not go to lunch with you, and the ingredient list includes sodium lauryl sulphate.
Judged only on breath, this is the most serious product we looked at, and it deserves credit for the reason it works. Its combination of zinc acetate and chlorhexidine neutralises the volatile sulphur compounds that cause the smell, rather than covering them with mint. There is clinical work behind the twelve-hour claim. It also contains sodium fluoride.
But it is answering the question “how do I not smell”, not the question this test asked. Nothing is left on the tooth surface.
What we did not like: the published ingredient list includes alcohol; the price per use is high; and after twelve hours the mouth is exactly where it started.
A well-made clinical product, and the one place on this list where a criticism would be unfair — because the manufacturer says the same thing we would. Curaprox’s own instructions are 10 ml for 60 seconds, morning and night, for up to one month, and their own guidance states that a chlorhexidine rinse should be used on a dentist’s recommendation and that in normal circumstances it is not required.
So it ranks fourth not because it is weak but because it is a course of treatment, not a daily habit. Different job.
What we did not like: nothing, for what it is. It simply is not an everyday product, and it never claimed to be.
It earns its place because of how many people already have a bottle of it, and because on its own terms it works: essential oils reduce plaque bacteria, and the Total Care line contains sodium fluoride.
Against our six questions, though, it is the clearest example of the whole point of this test. It is built to remove and to freshen. The classic formulations are alcohol-based, which is why the alcohol-free Zero line exists alongside them — worth knowing if a dry mouth is already part of the problem.
What we did not like: it is subtraction only. After you spit, there is nothing on the tooth that was not there before — and if you are using an alcohol-based version, there is less saliva than there was before.

Our conclusion
Seventeen products, and the useful finding was not which one won. It was that most of the shelf is answering a question nobody actually has.
People do not have a plaque problem that a stronger mint fixes. They have a mineral problem that runs six times a day, in the hours when the toothbrush is in a different building. Almost nothing on that shelf is built for those hours, because almost everything on it needs a sink.
What came first in our test was the only one that did not.
